Zenitsu vs Demon Twixtor

Zenitsu’s First Fight

Zenitsu Agatsuma’s first true battle begins long before he draws his sword. It starts with the sound of his own trembling. By the time he and Tanjiro Kamado reach the eerie mansion in the woods—its walls pulsing under the influence of strange drumbeats—Zenitsu is already on edge. His fear clings to him more tightly than his haori, and every rustle of leaves convinces him that death is lurking just a step away.

When the group of frightened children appears, begging for help after their brother was taken, Zenitsu’s panic rises even further. Tanjiro’s resolve pulls everyone inside, but once the twisting hallways separate the demon slayers, Zenitsu finds himself alone with one of the terrified siblings, Shoichi, who is far braver than Zenitsu thinks he is. With the mansion changing shape at every beat of a mysterious drum, Zenitsu has nowhere to run. His fear simmers until it hits a breaking point.

The hallway stretches endlessly, lit only by a few flickering lanterns. Every shadow feels alive. Zenitsu, gripping Shoichi’s hand, tries desperately to reassure the boy, though it’s obvious to both of them that Zenitsu is far more scared than the child. He tries to be brave—he really does—but the shaking in his legs betrays him. This is the moment Zenitsu’s inner conflict becomes painfully clear: he wants to survive, but he also wants to protect; he wants to run, yet he doesn’t want to abandon anyone.

Eventually, their frantic wandering ends when a demon appears—a creature with distorted limbs, sickly pale skin, and a low, guttural growl. It moves with a predator’s ease, its eyes fixed not on the boy but on the trembling swordsman standing in front of him. Zenitsu’s fear explodes into sheer paralysis. His legs refuse to obey him. His throat tightens. His sword arm droops helplessly.

The demon lunges.

Zenitsu screams.

And then—he faints.

To Shoichi, it looks like Zenitsu simply collapses from terror. But the demon pauses mid-attack. Something in Zenitsu changes the moment he loses consciousness. The frantic shaking stills, replaced by a calm as deep as a silent lake. His breathing steadies into a controlled rhythm. His hand, which had been trembling uncontrollably just seconds before, now rests lightly on the hilt of his sword with practiced precision.

Shoichi stares, stunned, as the Zenitsu he knows seems to vanish, replaced by someone else entirely—someone composed, sharp, and deadly.

The demon lunges again.

Zenitsu moves.

In a single, fluid motion, he draws his blade. The air crackles. His stance settles low, focused, his body aligned like a bolt preparing to strike. Thunder gathers in the space around him, though there is no storm. There is only the hum of electricity and the whisper of metal.

Then he steps forward—so fast that even the demon cannot react.

The world seems to split with the flash of his blade.

Thunder Breathing, First Form: Thunderclap and Flash.

One strike. One breath. One perfect blow.

When the moment passes, Zenitsu stands with his sword extended, eyes still closed, posture calm. Behind him, the demon’s body falls apart in two clean halves. The creature dissolves into ash before it even understands what killed it.

Shoichi can hardly speak. The swordsman who moments ago was shaking like a leaf now radiates quiet strength, as if he had always possessed this mastery. And then, just as suddenly, Zenitsu collapses to the ground, waking moments later with no memory of what he did. He sees the ash scattering across the floor and bursts into another panic, convinced that Shoichi must have protected him.

Zenitsu’s first fight reveals the contradiction at the heart of his character: a coward who becomes a prodigy when unconscious, a boy whose fear hides astonishing potential. It is the beginning of his journey toward realizing the strength he truly possesses—not the strength that appears only when he faints, but the strength waiting to be awakened while he’s fully aware.
