Will Byers’ story in Stranger Things Season 2 is one of fear, resilience, and slow recovery. After surviving his disappearance into the Upside Down in Season 1, Will returns home, but his trauma follows him. Season 2 focuses less on a physical rescue and more on the emotional and psychological cost of what he endured, making Will’s arc quieter but deeply important to the overall story.
At the beginning of the season, Will is back in Hawkins and trying to live a normal life. He goes to school again, spends time with his friends, and wants things to feel the way they used to. However, it quickly becomes clear that he has not truly escaped the Upside Down. Will experiences frightening visions of a dark, stormy version of Hawkins and a massive shadow creature later known as the Mind Flayer. These episodes feel like flashbacks mixed with hallucinations, showing that the Upside Down has left a permanent mark on him. One of the most important aspects of Will’s character in this season is how his trauma is handled. He is scared and confused, but he often tries to hide it to protect his family and friends. When he first tells his mother, Joyce, and Dr. Owens about his visions, he hopes they can simply “fix” him. Instead, the doctors treat his experiences as psychological aftereffects of stress. This response highlights a realistic struggle: adults trying to explain away something supernatural because it is easier than believing the truth. Will, meanwhile, feels increasingly isolated because he knows what he is seeing is real.
Will’s relationship with his friends also changes in Season 2. Mike, Lucas, and Dustin care deeply about him, but they are starting to grow in different directions. Dustin is focused on his mysterious new pet, Lucas is becoming more skeptical and serious, and Mike is still grieving Eleven. Will feels left behind, symbolized by his desire to play Dungeons & Dragons like they used to. This emotional distance makes Will’s situation more painful, as he is fighting something terrifying while also feeling like he no longer fully belongs.
As the season progresses, Will’s connection to the Upside Down becomes more dangerous. The Mind Flayer begins to possess him, using Will as a way to spy on Hawkins. This possession strips Will of his control and turns him into a tool for the enemy, which is tragic because he has already suffered so much. Noah Schnapp’s performance is especially powerful during these moments, showing Will’s fear, anger, and helplessness without needing many words. Will is not evil, but he is forced to do harm, which adds another layer to his trauma.
Despite this, Will is never portrayed as weak. His strength comes from endurance and honesty. Even while possessed, he fights to communicate with his family, using Morse code through taps to warn them about the tunnels spreading under Hawkins. This moment shows that Will is still present inside the Mind Flayer’s control, resisting as much as he can. His bond with Joyce and Jonathan is also crucial. Joyce’s refusal to give up on her son, and Jonathan’s quiet support, reinforce the theme that love and family are powerful forces against darkness.
