Garp vs Kuzan: Clash of Will and Legacy
The world of One Piece is built on powerful ideologies, personal convictions, and the weight of generations. Few battles encapsulate that better than the hypothetical (and partially realized) clash between Monkey D. Garp, the legendary Hero of the Marines, and Kuzan (Aokiji), the former Marine admiral turned Blackbeard pirate. This fight isn’t just about strength—it’s about conflicting beliefs, broken loyalties, and the painful collision of past and present.
Two Titans, One Bond
Garp and Kuzan share more than just immense power—they share history. Garp, the Marine hero who once cornered Gol D. Roger and refused promotions to stay on the battlefield, is a symbol of old-school Marine justice. Kuzan, once a promising admiral, looked up to Garp and Sengoku, adopting a more humane and laid-back approach to justice compared to many in the Navy.
Yet, when Sakazuki (Akainu) became Fleet Admiral, Kuzan could no longer reconcile his ideals with the direction the Marines were taking. He left after a deadly ten-day duel and eventually joined Blackbeard—a move that shocked the world.
So, when Garp and Kuzan finally come to blows in the Egghead–era timeline, it’s not just student vs teacher. It’s idealism vs disillusionment, legacy vs revolution, and ultimately, heart vs logic.
Powers and Abilities
Garp, though not a Devil Fruit user, is a physical monster. His raw strength is legendary—he once trained by throwing cannonballs like baseballs and famously crushed mountains during training. In his prime, he rivaled the Pirate King. Even in old age, he still uses Haki at a terrifying level, especially Advanced Armament Haki, as seen in his Galaxy Impact attack that obliterated an entire section of Hachinosu.
Garp also possesses Conqueror’s Haki, evidenced by the black lightning during his attacks. His punches carry not just force, but the sheer will to dominate his opponents.
Kuzan, on the other hand, is a master of the Hie Hie no Mi (Ice-Ice Fruit). As a former admiral, he’s capable of freezing oceans, stopping tsunamis, and reshaping entire battlefields in an instant. His fight with Akainu permanently changed the climate of Punk Hazard—demonstrating how far his powers can reach when unleashed.
But more than his fruit, Kuzan’s strength lies in his calm, strategic mind. He doesn’t rush. He waits, analyzes, and strikes with deadly precision. Against Garp, he must use every ounce of that to counter a man who can break through overwhelming Devil Fruit powers with sheer willpower and brute force.
The Emotional Core
The fight between Garp and Kuzan is heartbreaking. For Garp, Kuzan was one of the last Marines he believed in—a man who still had a heart, even if he left the Marines. For Kuzan, Garp represents a fading ideal, a man who stood for justice when the world no longer does. Garp doesn’t fight Kuzan just to win—he fights to reach him, to question his choices, and to protect the future generation of Marines and pirates alike. In the Egghead arc, he arrives on Hachinosu to save Koby, calling him “the future of the Marines.” That’s the kind of man Garp is—fighting for others even when the world turns against him.
Kuzan, now under Blackbeard, is a puzzle. Is he truly loyal to Blackbeard, or does he have an agenda of his own? Regardless, when he faces Garp, he doesn’t hold back. He freezes Garp solid in one of the most emotionally charged moments in recent One Piece chapters. Whether it was mercy or necessity, we don’t yet fully know.
Who Wins?
On pure strength, Garp still rivals an admiral, even in old age. His Conqueror’s Haki-infused attacks can bypass Devil Fruit defenses and cause widespread destruction. But Kuzan’s versatility, range, and stamina, especially in prolonged battles, make him a terrifying counter to someone like Garp.
The battle ends with Garp severely wounded or possibly captured, implying Kuzan held the advantage—or was simply willing to go further. But it wasn’t a clean victory. Garp inflicted massive damage, both physically and emotionally. Kuzan’s face after the fight isn’t that of a victor—it’s that of a man who just defeated his own mentor.
Conclusion
Garp vs Kuzan is more than strength vs strength—it’s a war between two philosophies. One fights to protect the future; the other may have given up on it. But in the end, Garp’s unshakable will leaves a mark on Kuzan, reminding him—and us—that real strength isn’t about winning, but about standing tall for what you believe in, no matter the cost.
