Elijah Mikaelson Twixtor
Elijah Mikaelson: The Noble Original
Elijah Mikaelson, the eldest surviving son of the Mikaelson family, stands as a symbol of honor, loyalty, and restraint in The Vampire Diaries and The Originals universe. Among the first vampires ever created, Elijah has spent over a thousand years walking the line between civility and savagery. With his trademark suits, calm demeanor, and moral code, he is often referred to as “the noble brother,” but his journey reveals a man who is as haunted and conflicted as he is dignified.
Born in the 10th century to Esther and Mikael, Elijah became a vampire when his mother used a powerful spell to transform her children into immortals, hoping to protect them from the dangers of their violent world. The spell gave them eternal life—but also cursed them with an insatiable thirst for blood. While his siblings reacted in different ways, Elijah tried to maintain a sense of humanity, setting himself apart by clinging to principles such as family, honor, and self-control. From the beginning, Elijah acts as the glue that holds the volatile Mikaelson family together. He is fiercely loyal to his siblings, especially to Klaus, despite Klaus’s frequent betrayals and violent tendencies. Elijah believes that the family is sacred and that it must always stand together, no matter the cost. His repeated attempts to redeem and protect Klaus are central to his character arc, and while this loyalty is admirable, it often blinds him to the damage Klaus causes.
Elijah is a master of diplomacy, often choosing words over violence, even when surrounded by chaos. He is calm, calculated, and strategic, preferring negotiation to bloodshed. However, underneath his composed exterior lies a deadly predator. As an Original vampire, Elijah possesses immense strength, speed, and endurance, and he’s not afraid to kill when it’s necessary. His ability to control his violent instincts—except in rare, emotionally intense moments—adds depth to his stoic personality.
In The Originals, Elijah’s character is explored more fully. His past is riddled with guilt, regret, and broken promises. He has been in love many times, yet those relationships are often doomed by his responsibilities to his family and the darkness within him. His most significant romantic connection is with Hayley Marshall, the mother of Klaus’s daughter, Hope. Their bond is intense, genuine, and tragic. Hayley brings out Elijah’s softer side, challenging his loyalty to his family and making him confront the parts of himself he’s tried to suppress.
Elijah’s internal conflict is one of the most compelling elements of his story. He wants to be a man of virtue, but he has committed countless atrocities in the name of family. This tension between who he is and who he wants to be drives much of his character development. As The Originals progresses, Elijah begins to question his devotion to Klaus and the lengths he’s gone to in order to protect the family. He wrestles with the idea that, perhaps, loyalty without limits can become a form of self-betrayal.
Over time, Elijah’s perfect image begins to crack. He realizes that in trying to uphold the family’s legacy, he’s sacrificed his own happiness and peace of mind. His decision to have his memories erased at one point in The Originals is symbolic of his deep desire to escape the burden of his past and finally live without guilt. But even without those memories, the goodness in him remains, proving that his nobility isn’t just an act—it’s part of his core.
In the end, Elijah’s journey is one of sacrifice and redemption. He dies alongside Klaus, choosing to accompany his brother into death so Klaus doesn’t face it alone. This final act encapsulates who Elijah is: a man who lived by a code, loved deeply, and always put his family above himself. Though his life was filled with pain and compromise, Elijah Mikaelson remains a figure of dignity in a world ruled by chaos.
