Berlin – The Tragic Antihero of Money Heist
Berlin, whose real name is Andrés de Fonollosa, is one of the most complex, charismatic, and controversial characters in Money Heist (La Casa de Papel). Played by Pedro Alonso, Berlin is introduced as the second-in-command during the Royal Mint of Spain heist. With his elegant suits, commanding presence, and blend of cruelty and charm, Berlin immediately captures the audience’s attention as both a villain and a deeply flawed hero. He is the half-brother of The Professor (Sergio Marquina), and while their personalities contrast — with The Professor being calm and cerebral — Berlin is flamboyant, impulsive, and theatrical. Despite this, their bond is built on trust, shared trauma, and a belief in the romanticism of rebellion.
A Complicated Past
Before the heist, Berlin was a seasoned jewel thief who carried out high-end robberies across Europe. He lived a life of luxury, funded by crime, and styled himself as an aristocrat of theft. He suffers from a terminal illness (Helmer’s myopathy), which adds urgency and fatalism to his actions during the heist. Berlin knows his days are numbered, and he approaches each moment with a mixture of indulgence, recklessness, and poetic detachment.
He has been married five times and describes himself as a lover of art, music, and women. Yet underneath the charm lies a darker, colder side. Berlin is willing to use violence, intimidation, and psychological control to maintain order among the hostages and even within the gang. This authoritarian approach often puts him at odds with others, particularly Tokyo, Nairobi, and Denver.
Leadership and Control
During the Royal Mint heist, Berlin serves as the on-ground leader while The Professor operates from outside. His leadership style is authoritarian but effective. He maintains discipline and order through a combination of fear, charisma, and calculated cruelty. For example, he coldly executes a hostage to send a message, but also shows moments of tenderness and depth that suggest there’s more to him than brutality.
His ability to manipulate, charm, and dominate is part of what makes him so magnetic. Berlin is the type of character who can quote poetry before committing a crime, who romanticizes death while holding a gun. He sees life as a performance, and he plays his role with dramatic flair.
A Brother’s Loyalty
Berlin’s relationship with The Professor is one of the emotional anchors of the show. Despite his ego and volatility, Berlin deeply respects and loves his brother. The Professor, in turn, trusts Berlin with critical aspects of the plan, even when others in the group question his methods.
Their bond is especially poignant because of Berlin’s terminal illness. The Professor knows his brother won’t survive long, and Berlin himself accepts his fate with dignity. This acceptance leads to his most defining moment — his heroic death at the end of Part 2, where he sacrifices himself to allow the rest of the gang to escape. Facing a police assault, Berlin holds the line, buying time in a blaze of bullets and defiance. It’s a redemptive moment that transforms him from a divisive character into a tragic hero.

Even after his death, Berlin’s presence looms large over the series. Through flashbacks in later seasons, we learn more about his past — including his role in planning the Bank of Spain heist with Palermo, and his romantic entanglements with characters like Tatiana (his fifth wife). These glimpses add layers to his character: his loneliness, his arrogance, and his yearning for meaning and beauty in life.
The spinoff series, Berlin (2023), further explores his backstory and heists before the events of Money Heist, highlighting both his genius and moral ambiguity.
A Complicated Icon
Berlin is a character who defies simple labels. He is a misogynist, a romantic, a sociopath, and a martyr. He is both repellent and irresistible, capable of cruelty and immense sacrifice. He represents the darker, more passionate side of rebellion — one that is driven not just by ideology, but by ego, legacy, and the desire to live (and die) gloriously.
In the end, Berlin stands as one of the most unforgettable figures in Money Heist — a man who embraced the chaos of life and death with style, arrogance, and a strange, undeniable grace.
