Toji Fushiguro is one of the most feared and fascinating characters in Jujutsu Kaisen, originally created by Gege Akutami. Yet ironically, his complete lack of cursed energy is precisely what makes him so dangerous. Cold, calculating, and overwhelmingly powerful, Toji embodies the idea that raw physical ability and strategic intelligence can rival even the strongest supernatural forces.
Born into the prestigious Zenin Clan, Toji’s early life was defined by rejection and abuse. The Zenin valued cursed techniques above all else, and since Toji was born without cursed energy, he was treated as a failure. However, his condition was not weakness—it was a rare Heavenly Restriction that removed his cursed energy entirely in exchange for superhuman physical abilities. His senses, speed, strength, and reflexes surpassed those of most jujutsu sorcerers. While others relied on techniques and barriers, Toji relied purely on instinct and physical dominance.
Resentful of the Zenin Clan and the jujutsu world that belittled him, Toji eventually abandoned the family name “Zenin” and took the surname Fushiguro. He lived as an assassin for hire, targeting powerful sorcerers and curses alike. His reputation as the Sorcerer Killer was earned through brutal efficiency and near-flawless execution of high-risk missions. Toji’s combat style is unique; because he has no cursed energy, he is undetectable to sorcerers who rely on sensing cursed presence. This gives him a terrifying edge in battle.
Toji’s most iconic confrontation occurs during the Hidden Inventory arc, where he faces the prodigious young sorcerer Satoru Gojo. At the time, Gojo was already considered a once-in-a-generation talent with the Limitless technique and Six Eyes. Yet Toji defeats him in their first encounter through preparation, patience, and careful strategy. By exhausting Gojo beforehand and exploiting the mechanics of his technique, Toji accomplishes what seemed impossible—killing the strongest sorcerer of his era, even if temporarily. This shocking moment cemented his legendary status. His relationship with his son, Megumi Fushiguro, reveals hints of suppressed humanity. Although Toji abandons Megumi, he ensures that the boy will not grow up trapped within the Zenin Clan’s cruelty. In his own distant way, this decision suggests a lingering sense of care.
Toji’s resurrection during the Shibuya Incident arc further highlights his terrifying nature. Even when brought back without full awareness, his body’s instinct for battle overwhelms everything else. He dominates powerful opponents effortlessly, demonstrating that his strength is not dependent on conscious strategy alone—it is ingrained in his very being. Yet in a rare emotional moment, upon realizing Megumi has taken the Fushiguro name rather than Zenin, Toji chooses to end his own life. This act is not dramatic or sentimental, but it reveals that even someone as hardened as Toji retained a quiet concern for his child’s freedom.
