Rudo, often referred to as Ryudo in some translations, is the central protagonist of Gachiakuta, a dark fantasy manga written by Kei Urana with graffiti-inspired art by Hideyoshi Andou. As a character, Rudo embodies rage, resilience, and moral defiance in a world that thrives on cruelty and social division. His journey is not simply about survival or revenge, but about redefining worth in a society that treats both people and objects as disposable.
Rudo is introduced as a boy living in the slums of a floating city, a place where the poor survive on scraps thrown away by the wealthy upper class. From the very beginning, he is marked as different. Unlike others who accept the system or grow numb to it, Rudo has a deep emotional connection to discarded objects. He believes that items thrown away still have value, a belief instilled in him by his adoptive father, Regto. This mindset is central to Rudo’s character and serves as a thematic backbone for Gachiakuta: the idea that worth is not determined by status, cleanliness, or societal approval. Tragedy defines Rudo’s turning point. When Regto is brutally murdered and Rudo is falsely accused of the crime, the system he already despised reveals its full ugliness. Without a trial or mercy, he is thrown into the “Pit,” a massive abyss beneath the city where trash, criminals, and unwanted things are dumped. This moment crystallizes Rudo’s rage. His anger is not blind, but focused—directed at the hypocrisy of a society that claims purity while building itself on cruelty and waste.
In the Pit, Rudo survives in a nightmarish environment filled with monstrous creatures born from garbage, known as Trash Beasts. It is here that his unique ability manifests. Rudo can draw out power from objects that have been deeply cherished or used with strong intent. These objects, called “Vital Instruments,” respond to emotion and purpose rather than wealth or craftsmanship. Rudo’s gloves, inherited from Regto, become his primary weapon, allowing him to channel immense destructive power. This ability reflects Rudo’s worldview: emotion, care, and meaning give things—and people—their true strength.
Personality-wise, Rudo is aggressive, foul-mouthed, and often violent, but he is not cruel. His anger is a shield, forged by years of neglect and injustice. Beneath it lies a strong moral core. He despises those who harm the weak, exploit others, or discard lives as easily as trash. While he struggles with trust and cooperation, Rudo is capable of deep loyalty and compassion, especially toward those who share his pain or stand against the same oppressive systems.
As Rudo joins the Cleaners, a group tasked with fighting Trash Beasts, his character continues to evolve. He is forced to confront the complexity of the world beyond his rage. Not all enemies are purely evil, and not all allies are purely good. Through these interactions, Rudo begins to grow—not by losing his anger, but by learning how to direct it with purpose. His desire for revenge against those who framed him and killed Regto remains strong, but it gradually intertwines with a larger goal: tearing down the system that creates “trash” in the first place.
Visually and symbolically, Rudo represents Gachiakuta’s raw aesthetic. His design—sharp expressions, wild eyes, and rugged clothing—matches the manga’s gritty tone. He looks like someone shaped by filth and violence, yet moving forward with relentless determination. The graffiti-like art style reinforces Rudo’s identity as a rebel, someone who leaves marks on a world that tried to erase him.
In essence, Rudo is a character driven by fury but sustained by meaning. He is not a hero in the traditional sense, but a survivor who refuses to accept a world built on disposability. Through Rudo, Gachiakuta explores themes of class, waste, and human value, making him a powerful and emotionally charged protagonist whose struggle feels both fantastical and painfully real.
