Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness Twixtor

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is a 2022 Marvel Studios film that dives deep into the consequences of tampering with alternate realities. Directed by Sam Raimi, the movie follows the journey of Stephen Strange as he navigates the complex, often dangerous web of the multiverse. It explores themes of control, sacrifice, regret, and redemption, all while expanding the supernatural side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

At the film’s start, Doctor Stephen Strange is still coping with the aftermath of the Infinity War and Endgame. Though he helped save the universe, he remains haunted by the choices he made—especially giving up the Time Stone and accepting only one path to victory. Now, despite the world returning to normal, he is emotionally unsettled. Christine Palmer, the woman he once loved, is marrying someone else, and Strange is left questioning whether he truly made the right choices in his personal and heroic life.

The story kicks into gear when America Chavez—a teenage girl with the rare ability to travel across dimensions—appears in Strange’s world, fleeing from a terrifying monster. Doctor Strange rescues her and learns that someone is hunting her across the multiverse to steal her power. This power would allow that person to freely jump between realities, regardless of the consequences.

Strange consults Wanda Maximoff, also known as the Scarlet Witch, hoping she can help protect America. However, he quickly discovers that Wanda is the one chasing the girl. After the events of WandaVision, Wanda has fully embraced the power of the Darkhold, a dark magic book that has corrupted her mind. Her only goal now is to find a universe where her children—whom she magically created in WandaVision—actually exist, and live there with them. She believes stealing America’s power is the only way to do it.

This revelation sets off a multiverse-spanning conflict. Doctor Strange and America are forced to flee through different universes as Wanda relentlessly pursues them. Along the way, Strange meets alternate versions of himself—some noble, some corrupted. These encounters force him to reflect on who he is at his core. In every universe, Stephen Strange seems to be a man who tries to control everything, often sacrificing others for the greater good. But in doing so, he leaves destruction behind.

The film presents the idea that Strange’s biggest flaw may be his need for control. His intelligence and abilities often put him in a position of power, but he struggles to accept that he can’t fix everything. His multiversal counterparts serve as cautionary tales, showing what happens when that desire for control turns obsessive.

Eventually, Doctor Strange must embrace an unorthodox solution. In one of the film’s boldest moments, he uses the Darkhold to “dreamwalk” into the corpse of a deceased alternate version of himself. This version becomes a zombie-like figure, which he uses to fight Wanda. The scene blends horror elements with superhero action, highlighting Sam Raimi’s signature style and pushing the boundaries of what audiences expect from a Marvel film.

The climax comes not from a traditional battle, but from an emotional resolution. Rather than defeating Wanda through violence, Strange helps America realize her full potential. She shows Wanda the consequences of her actions by confronting her alternate-universe children. Seeing their fear, Wanda breaks down and chooses to destroy the Darkhold and herself, ending the threat.

By the film’s end, Doctor Strange has grown. He begins to accept that he can’t always be in control and that trusting others is a strength, not a weakness. He also faces the consequences of using the Darkhold, as he develops a third eye—hinting at lingering effects of dark magic.
